Sure, it only has ~5 hours of content. But those 5 hours have had plenty of love and attention put into them. Great writing, engaging mysteries, and overall rather well put-together. Would definitely recommend if you want an actually decent game to pass the time with. Of course, it's trialware (first two cases are free, the other 7 cost money) but the full game is definitely worth the pricetag.

Several reviews mention issues with the game. As for me, my Moto G8 Plus played it fine. I rarely spend money on games, but I enjoyed playing the free cases enough to justify buying the next ones too. It's a good model, allowing players more than enough content to decide whether they want to pay or not, and without being heavy on the storyline (they let the gameplay speak for itself). Players who do pay for the extra cases do end up with the last few cases being more focused on the underlying story. I'd also say they're possibly the weakest parts in some respects, but they'll be people that find them the most interesting ones. They deal with why the Prof is the way he is, and the player gets to investigate on their own for a bit. I really like that you can't really "die" in the game. While that would make things more intense, some of the cases are frustrating because the game-logic and your logic (for example - I knew who had committed the murder because of a particular item, but the solution didn't feature that item at all), or because you miss a clue due to awkward placement. If that lead to "death" it'd make the game far less enjoyable. You don't need to have played any of the other games to play this, and although the game sort of holds your hand, I didn't find it overbearing. Cases are fun to solve still, and some of them can be quite challenging. It's a fun, cheap little game, with good art, good music, and good characters. Main gripe? Lucy. Or more specifically how she speaks. Not charming, sometimes a tad difficult to read, and annoying. That and one of the paid cases where you have to put up with her coming to a idiotic conclusion before you can investigate the case.

Firstly a reminder that this game is not free overall - only the first few levels are and the rest need to be unlocked. Having said that, it was an excellent game with a very reasonable price that made me wanting more! Unlike Hershel, Alfendi is a detective, solving crimes rather than puzzles. This means finding evidence, analysing it and coming to a conclusion. It's got an excellent puzzle design and a captivating story alongside it. I fully recommend to any fan of the original Professor Layton series, or anyone who enjoys detective games.
